Hyderabad: In October 2020, Hyderabad witnessed a record rainfall of 32 cm which was the second-highest rainfall to lash in the last 100 years, leaving scores of people in uncertainty. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic induced financial crisis, the State government provided Rs 10,000 per affected family. The Telangana BJP leaders promised Rs 25,000 per family ahead of the GHMC elections. But when Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao sought Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre towards relief measures, there has been no response till date.
However, the union government extended help to 21 States by providing them more than 40,000 crore under National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) between 2018-19 and 2021-22. Yet, the BJP MPs who do not shy away from making poll promises, could not get necessary support to the State. Leave alone supporting the needy and performing State like Telangana at the national level, the State BJP MPs could not fulfill even their poll promises to their constituents.
Take the case of union Minister and Secunderabad MP G Kishan Reddy for instance. He promised wider roads, less traffic congestion and better drainage system in his constituency ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, if voted to power. It has been nearly two-and-a-half-years, yet, he made no progress. Despite the State government repeatedly requesting handing over the Defence lands for public infrastructure development and construction of skyways, there has been no favourable response from the Centre.
Ironically, Kishan Reddy who is known as a gentleman among political circles, did not spell out a word on his promises till date. He could not even resolve the issue when the Army closed down certain cantonment roads giving a tough time for the commuters, despite him serving as union Minister of State for Home for a brief period and now being a Cabinet rank Minister.
Similar is the tale of Nizamabad MP D Arvind who gave it in writing on a bond paper that within 10 days after he takes oath as a Lok Sabha member, he would get the Turmeric Board sanctioned for Nizamabad. He also promised a minimum support price of Rs 15,000 per quintal for turmeric farmers as well as establishment of ethanol, sugar and other industries. Rather, the maverick MP is happy indulging in rhetoric and abusive speeches to criticise the ruling TRS in the State.
The little said the better about the remaining two MPs – BJP State president and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay and his fellow MP from Adilabad Soyam Bapu Rao. Despite making tall electoral promises, the duo could not even get sanctioned a new Kendriya Vidyalaya or Navodaya Vidyalaya in their respective Parliamentary constituencies. While the State government has been repeatedly seeking an Indian Institute of Management for Karimnagar and reopening of the Cement Corporation of India plant in Adilabad, the respective Lok Sabha members dusted off their hands by writing letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As was pointed out by TRS working president and Minister KT Rama Rao, the BJP MPs are confining themselves to provocative speeches and divisive politics rather than speaking about the policies of the Centre and the State governments or raising issues of public interest. While they evade any direct questions on their contribution to the State development from people or media, one cannot help but wonder if they have any plans to contest for next Lok Sabha elections except for making empty promises and religious politics.
