Hyderabad: The fee revision for engineering and other professional programmes offered by private colleges in Telangana has been put on hold for the academic year 2025-26.
The Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) was in the process of finalising a new fee structure for programmes. However, it has been learnt that the State government intervened, resulting in halting the process.
In a crucial TAFRC meeting held here on Wednesday, it has been decided to constitute a sub-committee, which will thoroughly review the proposed fees hike in the private colleges. The responsibility of setting up the sub-committee has been handed over to Telangana Council of Higher Education.
The move comes following significant hikes noticed in some private engineering colleges based on their proposal. The government is also concerned about the State’s exchequer, which has already been under financial stress.
Any fee hike will further deteriorate State’s financial condition as the fee reimbursement arrears have already touched Rs.8,000 crore. A further hike will increase the burden on the State’s coffers by another Rs. 500 crore to Rs. 800 crore annually.
As per the rules, the tuition fee in private professional colleges is revised once in three years, which is due for the block three-year period starting academic year 2025-26.
