Hyderabad: A robust revival of monsoon activity over the past few days has dramatically altered Telangana’s weather landscape, turning a severe seasonal rainfall deficit into a manageable shortfall.

Widespread downpours in the last few days have brought major relief to Hyderabad and its surrounding districts, sharply cutting down deficits that had caused growing concern earlier in the month.

Just weeks ago, districts and the Hyderabad region were grappling with a sluggish monsoon phase and high temperatures. However, heavy spells of rain have altered the scenario quite significantly.

The cumulative seasonal rainfall deficit from June 1 to July 30 has drastically narrowed down to a deficit of 11 per cent. The State has received 315.8 mm of rainfall against a normal of 353.5 mm, which is a massive recovery from the 31 per cent deficit recorded earlier in July.

The cumulative rainfall deficit in GHMC and surrounding areas of Cyberabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri is now 16 per cent. Till now, since June 1, the actual rainfall received by these areas is 230.1 mm against a normal of 274.0 mm, quite a significant bounce back from the 39 per cent deficit during early July.

In the last 24-hours (between 8.30 am Wednesday and 8.30 am Thursday), Hyderabad and neighbouring districts witnessed heavy downpour, with Golconda recording the highest rainfall of 35.3 mm.

The seasonal deficit in Hyderabad district is now 17 per cent, which placed the district in ‘Normal’ status category, a major improvement from the earlier deficit of 40 percent.

Rangareddy and Sangareddy are now in the ‘normal’ category with positive seasonal deviations of 16 percent and five percent respectively. Medchal-Malkajgiri has continued to remain in deficit with 38 per cent. Thanks to the rains, at present 21 districts in Telangana are in normal category and 12 districts in deficit category.
