Hyderabad: The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has estimated that Rs 53.76 crore will be required for temporary repairs and Rs 1,157.46 crore for permanent reconstruction of damaged road infrastructure across Telangana due to the ongoing monsoon.
According to officials, the rains have caused a severe toll on the road network. Engineers across 37 divisions identified 794 vulnerable points with damage to 1,039 km of road stretches. At least 31 roads were completely cut off, though 10 stretches have been restored temporarily.
Of the 356 submerged culverts and causeways, diversions were set up at 289 points. Out of 305 stretches blocked by floodwaters, traffic has already been cleared at 236 locations. Overall, 206 culverts, causeways and minor bridges suffered structural damage.
Control room on alert
A round-the-clock Control Centre has been set up at the R&B Head Office, with four officers deployed per shift for continuous monitoring and coordination with field engineers.
With heavy rains lashing Telangana, R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy held a teleconference with senior officials and divisional engineers after widespread damage was reported from Medak, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, Rajanna-Sircilla and Nirmal districts.
A major disruption was reported on NH-44 near Kamareddy and Nirmal, where floodwaters hampered traffic flow. The Minister directed that clearance measures be expedited and traffic restored at the earliest.
Warning signboards must be installed at all cut roads, washed-out culverts and bridges under flood, he instructed.
“The coming days will be crucial. Engineers must remain in the field, constantly monitor vulnerable stretches, and coordinate with Police, Irrigation, Electricity, Panchayat Raj and Revenue departments to prevent loss of life,” the Minister cautioned. He also directed officials to prepare permanent reconstruction proposals for damaged roads and bridges.
