Telangana: Residents oppose plan to shift Karimnagar dumping yard near Huzurabad
Residents of around 20 villages and Huzurabad municipality have opposed the State government’s plan to shift the Karimnagar dumping yard near Sirsapalli. A Joint Action Committee has been formed to protest the move, citing concerns over pollution and crop damage.
KARIMNAGAR: The State government’s decision to shift Karimnagar dumping yard nearer to Huzurabad is strongly opposed by the local people. Residents of nearby villagers have decided to launch an agitation against the decision. In order to find a permanent solution to Karimnagar dumping yard, the government has decided to shift it from the spot and identified a place near Sirsapalli in Huzurabad mandal.
However, the people from 20 surrounding villages as well as Huzurabad municipality are opposing it on the ground that pollution would increase which could also affect the crops. Local people formed a Joint Action Committee to take up the agitation against the dumping yard. In a meeting held in Huzurabad on Sunday, JAC has decided to pass resolutions in all gram panchayats as well as in Huzurabad municipality opposing dumping yard.
Besides observing Deekshas in all villages, it was also decided to give representations to public representatives as well as the leaders of various political parties seeking their support against the dumping yard. It was also decided to approach the High Court if necessary.
A huge quantity of garbage has piled up in Autonagar dumping yard in Karimnagar since garbage has been dumped at the spot for the last 40 years. People residing in the surrounding areas are facing respiratory and other health problems after inhaling the smoke emanating from it due to frequent fire accidents.
So, there is a demand from the local people for shifting of the dumping yard. Thou1gh the officials of Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar had identified a few places to shift yard, it had not materialised. Though a bio-mining unit was set up in nine acres by spending Rs 16 crore under Karimnagar Smart City programme, it was stalled in January 2025 due to various reasons.
Every day, about 135 to 155 metric tons of garbage are generated in all divisions of MCK. A huge quantity of garbage has been heaped up as there was no system to clear it regularly.
To find a permanent solution to the problem, the State government has decided to shift it from Karimnagar. During his recent visit to Choppadandi, the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced to establish a new dumping yard in between Karimnagar and Warangal. As part of the government’s decision, a place has been identified near Sirsapalli.
