Hyderabad: The Prisons and Correctional Services department on Sunday was alloted 101 acres of land at Mamnoor in Warangal district for construction of an ultra-modern model central prison.
Warangal Central Prison Superintendent Santosh Kumar Roy received the papers to take possession of the land belonging to the Telangana State Special Police (TSSP).
Following instructions from the State government, the Prisons department vacated the central prison in Warangal and handed over the premises to the Medical and Health department. The location will now be used for construction of a super-speciality hospital as envisioned by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to cater to the healthcare needs of the growing population of Warangal and adjoining areas.
The Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the immediate upgradation of facilities in other prisons where the prisoners from Warangal were shifted. He had also instructed the Revenue department authorities to identify suitable land for the construction of an ultra-modern central prison at Warangal.
The authorities identified 101 acres of land belonging to TSSP in Mamnoor. After approval from Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy and Home Secretary Ravi Gupta, the land was officially handed over by TSSP Commandant to Roy.
Prisons Department Director-General Rajiv Trivedi expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for guiding and promptly alloting land for the new prison. He said the new prison will ensure humane and caring custody besides being oriented towards reformation, skilling and rehabilitation of prisoners. “The construction of the new prison will be completed in two years,” he added.
According to officials, as many as 956 prisoners who were lodged in Warangal Central Prison were shifted to various prisons across the State. A majority of these prisoners who were involved in serious crimes were shifted to Cherlapally and Chanchalguda prisons.
Over 94 prisoners including four women, who were lodged in Warangal Central Prisons under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, were also lodged in Cherlapally prison. “We have completed the process of shifting prisoners from Warangal to other prisons in a hassle-free manner in 10 days,” Roy said, adding that most remand prisoners from Warangal were sent to Cherlapally prison.
