Khammam: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC) Chairman Justice G Chandraiah on Wednesday said the commission had taken suo moto cognisance of the custodial death of Ambadipudi Mariyamma and undertook an investigation into the incident.
The TSHRC Chairman along with the Commission judicial member Ananda Rao Nadipally and non-judicial member Mohammed Irfan Moinuddin paid a visit to Mariyamma’s son, Uday Kiran, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Khammam on Wednesday. Justice Chandraiah consoled Kiran and enquired with the hospital medical officers about the treatment being given to him.
Speaking to the media later, he said Mariyamma’s death was sad and in order to give moral support to her family, the Commission visited Kiran. He directed the hospital medical officers to ensure quality treatment to Kiran and if there were any issues, the Commission and the district administration have to be alerted.
He informed that the Commission and the State government have already taken steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. Soon after Kiran’s recovery, the Commission would speed up the investigation into the incident.
Later, Justice Chandraiah and the Commission members visited the Government District Headquarters Hospital and interacted with patients undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and distributed fruits to patients at the hospital’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH).
Speaking on the occasion, the TSHRC Chairman expressed satisfaction at the quality of the health services being offered to patients at the hospital. The Commission has been receiving individual petitions in large numbers and steps were being taken towards their expeditious disposal, he said.
The Commission strives to uphold Human Rights of the individuals guaranteed by the Constitution and enforceable by courts of law in India. Those violating such rights by misusing their power would be punished as per law and the official mechanism should work under the purview of the Constitution, Justice Chandraiah suggested.
District Collector RV Karnan informed the Commission that Khammam District Hospital topped the State in offering health services to the patients. Of the 500 beds available at the hospital over 200 beds were equipped with oxygen to treat Covid patients.
Commissioner of Police, Vishnu S Warrier, the hospital Superintendent Dr B Venkateshwarlu, RMO, Dr Srinivasa Rao and others were present.
