Khammam/Mahabubabad: Protests for urea have been taking violent turn as farmers, vexed with the alleged negligent attitude of the Congress government, protest the inadequate supply of urea.

Speaking to the media, farmers Ajmeera Anitha, Srinivas and others complained that they have been making rounds of the shop for the past few days for urea but they could get a single bag of urea.

The farmers said that when they came to the shop on Wednesday its owner told them to visit the next day and they waited at the shop since early morning hours on Thursday. Even after waiting until evening hours, urea was not distributed to farmers but the shop owner secretly sold urea to his relatives, they complained.

Angry farmers pelted stones and the shop owner, unable to bear the stone pelting, closed the shop. Later, the farmers raided the warehouse and took out the urea bags. This led to a clash between the police and farmers. As the situation escalated, police in large numbers rushed to the spot to control the situation.

In another incident at Cheruvu Madaram village of Nelakondapally mandal in Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy’s constituency in Khammam, an agriculture officer misbehaved with farmers and told them to get out of the PACS office. He called the farmers drunkards when asked for urea.

Farmers alleged that as many as 97 bags of urea went missing from Pongullapally PACS in Kothaguda mandal of Mahabubabad district last night. Officials who examined the CCTV footage claimed that the PACS staff took away the urea bags.

At Maripeda, cases were registered against several farmers, who protested at the local PACS on Wednesday; jumped over the gates and allegedly took away the urea bags. The authorities warned the farmers to hand over the urea bags they have taken away.

At Yellandu in Kothagudem, the activists of CPI (ML) Massline Praja Pandha, CPI (M), CPI (ML) New Democracy, Telangana Rythu Sangham leaders staged a protest at the local agriculture office demanding supply urea to farmers.
