Hyderabad: Former Rajya Sabha MP Santosh Kumar has called for national recognition of Vanajeevi Ramaiah, an environmentalist who dedicated his life to the cause of afforestation. Kumar proposed renaming the Khammam–Manuguru road as “Vanajeevi
Ramaiah Marg” to honour Ramaiah’s efforts in planting trees along an 8-kilometre stretch from Khammam to Reddypalli.
Despite the loss of these saplings during road expansion, Kumar urged the replanting of trees to restore Ramaiah’s vision. He also suggested renaming the annual Vanamahotsavam as “Ramaiah Vanamahotsavam” to celebrate his legacy.
Ramaiah’s impact has already been recognized in Karnataka, where his life story is included in school textbooks. Kumar emphasized the importance of Telangana following suit by incorporating Ramaiah’s inspiring journey into its educational curriculum. “The Green India Challenge,” Kumar noted, continues
Ramaiah’s ideals, promoting the belief that the planet’s future lies in the trees we plant today.
