ABVP protest: Temple town Basar comes under security blanket
Restrictions were imposed on pressmen who gathered at the RGUKT and other parts of the town to cover the protest of the ABVP. Media persons alleged that police forcibly deleted video clips from their mobile phones
Nirmal: Large contingents of police force were deployed at railway station, Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam and Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT) in Basar following ABVP’s call to lay siege to the university condemning alleged assault by security staff on the activists of the student union on Saturday.
Basar, which houses the famed abode of the goddess of wisdom, is under a security blanket of policemen. Railway station, the shrine and RGUKT were manned by the policemen. In particular, the RGUKT is being covered by a three-layered security. Outsiders were not permitted to enter the campus, while students were not allowed to step out of the varsity.
Police reportedly detained some of devotees visiting the shrine, suspecting them to be activists of ABVP. Restrictions were imposed on pressmen who gathered at the RGUKT and other parts of the town to cover the protest of the ABVP. Media persons alleged that police forcibly deleted video clips from their mobile phones.
The ABVP called for laying siege to the university on Saturday. It requested the activists of the union across the State to participate in the protest. Policemen drawn from various parts and neighboring Nizamabad district were deployed to prevent the protest of the ABVP.
On November 11, a mild tension prevailed when activists of ABVP and security staffers jostled each other at the main gate of the university, demanding action against officials of the institution following the suicide of student P Swathi Priya.
One of the activists sustained serious injuries. Subsequently, cases were registered against the security staffers and activists of the union.
