Hyderabad: The siren of an animal ambulance is no longer an unusual sound on the city’s streets. In the past year, the Arham Animal Ambulance has quietly built a lifeline for injured, ill, and abandoned animals, responding to hundreds of distress calls of animal emergencies every day.
Launched by the Pune-based Arham Yuva Seva Group (AYSG), the service began on a modest scale, receiving barely 20 calls a day in the city. But within months, word spread through communities and social media, leading to a steep rise in public outreach. Today, the team handles nearly 200 to 250 distress calls on average, often racing against time to reach accident-hit animals across different parts of the city.
Unlike conventional veterinary services, the Arham Animal Ambulance service focuses on immediate, on-ground response. Equipped to provide first aid, the team treats animals at the spot whenever possible, reducing the delay that often proves fatal in emergency cases. From injured stray dogs and ailing cattle to birds in distress, the service caters to a wide spectrum of cases. So far, the team has attended to around 900 cases since its launch in Hyderabad.
Veterinary paravet Vijay Sharma, part of the frontline rescue unit, says the nature of calls reflects the risks animals face in a rapidly urbanising city. “Most of our calls are related to stray dogs, particularly road accident cases. But we also rescue birds and other animals suffering from illness or injuries. Every call is urgent in its own way,” he said.
He recounted a recent rescue near Budwel, where a day-old puppy was found critically injured after being run over by an unidentified vehicle. “We rushed to the location and administered treatment immediately. Situations like these are extremely sensitive, but timely intervention can make a difference,” Sharma noted.
Operating free of cost, the Arham Animal Ambulance fills a critical gap in urban animal healthcare, especially for strays that lack access to timely treatment.
