Hyderabad: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad, on Monday carried out raids at a facility in Kushaiguda that was supplying sanitary pads without ISI mark and seized 30,000 pads and over 7,000 label covers that did not have ISI mark.

“BIS certification with IS 5405:2019 standards is mandatory for all sanitary pads, according to the Quality Control Order. Strict action will be taken against those who sell, manufacture, or store them without obtaining BIS certification,” he said.

According to Section 17 of the BIS Act 2016, if anyone manufactures, sells, or stores any product for which BIS certification is mandatory without the ISI mark, registration mark or without obtaining BIS permission, they face a jail term of up to two years.

A fine of Rs 2 lakh can also be imposed for a first time offense and jail term of up to 5 years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh for the second offense. In case of multiple offenses, the amount increases to 10 times. “Till now, the union Central government has issued several Quality Control Orders making 679 products mandatory for certification,” he said.

Srikanth urged the general public/ consumer to be aware of India Standards and use the BIS Care mobile app to file complaints and violations, in case they notice. BIS Joint Directors Savitha and Rakesh Tanneeru participated in the inspections.
