Mahabubabad: The election for Thorrur Municipality chairperson and vice-chairperson was held on Tuesday amid high drama and heavy police deployment. The vote had been postponed from Monday due to heightened tension following clashes between BRS and Congress cadres. Of the 16 municipal wards, BRS won nine and Congress seven. With Congress MLA M Yashaswini Reddy and MP Kadiam Kavya registered as ex-officio members, Congress’ strength increased to nine.
With both parties holding equal strength, officials resorted to a draw of lots to elect the chairperson and vice-chairperson. The second ward councillor, T Shravan Kumar, and 14th ward councillor, Soma Rajini Rajasekhar, both from Congress, were elected chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively.
BRS cadres, led by former MLA Shankar Naik, staged a protest in Mahabubabad town demanding the immediate release of BRS leaders who were detained by the police. Shankar alleged that the police acted as “Congress workers” and illegally detained party leaders.
Speaking to the media, BRS leader Dayakar Rao accused Congress of mocking democracy and violating the Constitution. “Our cadres worked day and night for our candidates’ victory, yet Congress resorted to atrocities to win the election,” he said.
Rajya Sabha member Vaddiraju Ravichandra called it “deeply regrettable” that Congress had allegedly seized the municipality against the people’s verdict. He claimed that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Congress MPs used procedural loopholes to secure control, showing documents to support the allegation.
Meanwhile, elections for Dornakal Municipality were also held on Tuesday, with Congress councillors Kondeti Rajakumari and Madha Lavanya elected chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively. The election had been deferred on Monday due to a lack of quorum.
