Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has postponed its BC Garjana rally in Karimnagar from August 8 to August 14, citing heavy rains. Announcing the decision, senior BRS leader and former Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav reiterated the party’s demand for 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education and employment.
Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan, Srinivas Yadav came down heavily on the Congress, accusing it of staging political dramas in Delhi while doing little for the BC community on the ground.
“In the Kamareddy Declaration, the Congress promised 42 per cent reservation and a Rs 1 lakh crore budget for BCs. Where is it now?” he questioned.
He pointed to the absence of top Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge at the protest organised by the Congress, while leaders from INDIA bloc parties participated. He demanded that the government should not hold local body elections without implementing 42 per cent BC reservation.
Leader of Opposition in the Council, S Madhusudhana Chari said his party extended complete support to the BC reservation bills in both the Assembly and the Council. “We demanded that BC reservations be included in the Ninth Schedule just like Tamil Nadu did. Congress leaders never took us into confidence about their Delhi plans, as our presence would have exposed their doublespeak,” he said.
Former Minister V Srinivas Goud accused the Congress of offering only symbolic representation to BCs. “They promised 42 per cent, but sent an ordinance for the Governor’s approval only for local body polls, not for education and job reservations. They also gave BCs only nominal representation in the Cabinet. What about Revenue and Home?” he asked.
