Editorial: Growing clamour for Palestinian statehood

The latest move by the three countries — the UK, France and Canada — to announce plans to recognise a Palestinian state reflects a growing sense of frustration over Israel’s brutal military campaign

A tectonic shift is happening in the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, with international clamour for recognising Palestine as a sovereign state gaining momentum by the day. First, it was France, then the United Kingdom, and now Canada. The three influential Western nations have announced plans to recognise a Palestinian state, raising hopes of a two-state solution to the vexed conflict in the region. Already, many countries, including India, endorse the idea of a Palestinian state. The latest move by the three countries — the UK and France being the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—reflects a growing sense of frustration over Israel’s brutal military campaign, leading to the starvation of Palestinians and the failure of the United States-led peace efforts. An ideal goal, which India has been steadfastly supporting, is to have a two-state solution, with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. However, it still remains a distant dream as long as America continues to shield Tel Aviv from international pressure by vetoing resolutions at the UN and discouraging unilateral recognition of Palestine. Under the Trump Administration, America has leaned heavily in favour of Israel. Without the backing of Israel’s closest and most powerful ally, it is virtually impossible for the peace process to make any significant progress toward reaching the goal of a two-state solution. However, a major takeaway from the latest developments is that America’s influence is waning and its monopoly over the peace efforts is crumbling rapidly under the weight of its own contradictions and its inability to hold Israel accountable for expanding settlements and disproportionate military responses in Gaza and the West Bank.

With Palestine now enjoying the support of all four of the permanent members of the UNSC —China, Russia, UK and France — the US will be the lone defender of Israel. It is now increasingly clear that major Western powers are now willing to act independently of Washington’s Israel-centric posture and play a more assertive role in global diplomacy and peace-building. The recent conflict in Gaza, following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, has led to an unprecedented level of civilian casualties, the decimation of civilian infrastructure, and global outrage. Western governments, which initially backed Israel’s right to defend itself, have been accused of moral complicity as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza unfolded. The belated recognition, though with a set of riders, can be seen as an attempt to regain a moral balance. This development will certainly resonate across the Arab world, where popular anger over Western support for Israel has reached a boiling point. Palestinian statehood could help bring an end to a war that has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza since Hamas’s brutal attack killed around 1,200 people in Israel almost two years ago, as well as bring home the hostages still being held in Gaza.
