Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao strongly condemned the police brutality against ASHA workers during their protest for job security and better salaries at the office of Director of Health and Family Welfare in Koti on Monday. He found fault with the use of force by male police personnel against female ASHA workers.
Rama Rao visited the injured ASHA workers including Raheembi and Santhoshini who suffered severe injuries in the police assault and are undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital on Tuesday. He extended solidarity with their fight and offered all possible support to them as well as fight on their behalf in the Assembly during the ensuing session.
Speaking to mediapersons, Rama Rao reminded that ASHA workers were instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic and also delivering the healthcare services in remotest corners of the State. He stated that they were only seeking the Congress government to fulfill its promises made during elections.
The BRS working president lambasted the use of male police personnel especially a Assistant Commissioner of Police, who assaulted, dragged and mistreated women who were peacefully protesting for their just demands. “ASHA workers were attacked for simply demanding their rights. Male police beating women is unacceptable and a clear failure of the Home department, which is directly under this Chief Minister. This is a disgrace to government,” he stated.
He questioned the lack of accountability and demanded for immediate dismissal of the police officials for the misconduct. “Is there even a semblance of law and order left in this State? The ACP’s actions reflect the arrogance and failure of this administration,” he added.
Assuring full support to the injured workers, Rama Rao announced that the BRS would take the issue to the State Women’s Commission and, if necessary, escalate it to the National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Women. He also pledged medical assistance, including treatment in private hospitals on behalf of the BRS, if needed.
