Hyderabad: A lake in the capital is seeing a fresh lease of life after years of neglect, thanks to responsible citizens who took the issue to the notice of a proactive Minister and officials, that too in just 15 days.
The Langer Houz lake, which was in pathetic condition, filled with garbage, silt and weeds, has now been rejuvenated with a major part of the water body turning free of hyacinths and other trash.
The revival of the water body was set off after a few alert citizens pointed out the condition of the lake to Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao, who in turn directed Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi to inspect the water body and do the needful.
The Mayor, who adopted the water body, has now supervised the revival process that saw the GHMC Khairatabad Zone and various wings of the civic body making joint efforts by deploying staffers and machinery.
“Langer Houz lake was inspected on the instructions of MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao. Noticing the condition of the lake during the inspection, I decided to adopt it. I thank all the persons involved in the rejuvenation of the waterbody,” said the Mayor, who had inspected the works on February 4.
GHMC officials said around 12 tons of water hyacinth was removed and a 15-strong team was on the job.
“A floating trash collector and three excavators were deployed to clean the lake. While the GHMC entomology wing removed the water hyacinth, the transport wing used a catering machine to squeeze the hyacinth and transport it to the Jawahar Nagar dumpyard,” GHMC Chief Entomologist Ram Babu said.
This will not be all. The water body will get a makeover soon with the GHMC’s Urban Biodiversity wing being asked by the Mayor to take up beautification works including walking tracks and development of lush greenery around the water body.
According to GHMC, apart from the lake, the adjacent HUDA park too would be developed. “The development of the Langer Houz lake and HUDA Park will benefit over three lakh people living in 40 colonies in the vicinity of the lake,” officials said.
