Hyderabad: The Telangana government has launched efforts to ensure families who have lost their near and dear ones in government hospitals get enough facilities to bid adieu and perform last rites with due respect to the deceased.
As part of these efforts, the State government has undertaken massive renovation work aimed at modernising the existing medical infrastructure and basic amenities in 61 mortuaries in as many healthcare facilities with an overall cost of Rs. 32.54 crore.
The 10 mortuaries at government tertiary teaching hospitals located in Hyderabad including Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Fever Hospital, Chest Hospital, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Siddipet, Nizamabad, Warangal and Adilabad are being renovated with a cost of Rs. 11.12 crore. A total of Rs. 21.42 crore is being spent to modernise mortuary facilities at 51 other government hospitals that fall under the control of Telangana Vaidya Vidhan Parishad (TVVP) across Telangana.
Overall, close to 113 government mortuaries are available in Telangana and efforts are on to improve medical infrastructure and working conditions for employees. The health department is in the process of procuring much needed infrastructure including freezers and taking up construction of additional storage rooms, based on the existing guidelines.
To ensure postmortem facilities are available, the State government has already sanctioned to fill-up posts of 102 forensic experts out of which 62 Civil Assistant Surgeons (CAS), 20 DCS and 19 CS posts have been filled.
“The Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao wants to ensure the government hospitals have access to best mortuary facilities. A concerted effort has been launched to modernise the entire ecosystem including crematoriums, mortuary facilities and provide proper transport facilities to carry the deceased,” Health Minister, T Harish Rao said here on Wednesday.
The Telangana government had been offering nearly 50 hearse vehicles that provide transport facilities to relatives to transport bodies of the deceased to their native towns and villages. The State government in the coming days will launch 16 more such vehicles, which will further strengthen the hearse initiative in Telangana, Harish Rao said.
