Dubai: Preserving culture in a foreign land is no easy task for the NRI community, particularly for youngsters. Yet, many Telugu NRIs in the Gulf continue to keep traditions alive, blending heritage with contemporary expression.
Among them is 15-year-old Saanvi Bangari from Nizamabad, who has been winning hearts in Dubai with her Kuchipudi performances. The young dancer has been commanding the stage, transporting audiences into the world of classical dance with her grace and artistry.
Kuchipudi, one of the eight recognised classical dance forms of India, is known for its graceful movements, intricate footwork, expressive gestures and theatrical storytelling rooted in Hindu mythology.
Born in Nizamabad, Saanvi moved to Dubai with her parents, Swapna and Shanker, when she was an infant. While the UAE has its own rich traditions, such as Al-Ayyala and Khaleeji dances that are integral to Emirati culture, Saanvi has been showcasing the beauty of Kuchipudi at cultural events across Dubai, adding to the region’s cultural diversity.
She has carefully refined her technique to present the art form in a modern yet authentic manner, preserving its roots in choreography, music and performance, while carrying its spirit to the shores of the Arabian Gulf and across the Dubai desert.
Her performances, however, have not been confined to Dubai alone. Saanvi has also performed at Naadaneerajanam in Tirupati, Guruvayur in Ernakulam, Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu and several times at Shilparamam in Hyderabad.
“It was a thrilling experience in Tirupati’s Naadaneerajanam and Guruvayur in Kerala, Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, besides several times in Shilparamam in Hyderabad,” she said.
Recalling a memorable occasion, she added, “It was my privilege to show a Kuchipudi performance to His Highness Shaik Saud in Saqr Al Qasmi, ruler of Ras Al Khaima.”
