Nylon manja threat: Don’t open car sunroof, cautions NGO
Pradeep Nair, founder of AWCS, called upon the people not to use the sunroof in their cars at least for one month. Nair also suggested that bike riders use thick neck bands or a scarf around their necks as a precautionary measure apart from using helmets
Sangareddy: Come Sankrathi, and the skies in Telangana and Hyderabad in particular, will be dotted with colourful kites. However, every season, the kites also come with the threat of nylon manja to birds, animals, and humans.
Despite several reports of deaths and injuries to humans, people have failed to change and continue using nylon manja to fly the kites even today.
As a precaution against the threat of nylon manja getting entangled on the necks of bike riders and drivers with open sunroofs in cars, the Ameenpur-based NGO, Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS), has released some guidelines.
Pradeep Nair, founder of AWCS, called upon the people not to use the sunroof in their cars at least for one month. Nair also suggested that bike riders use thick neck bands or a scarf around their necks as a precautionary measure apart from using helmets.
He further said that bike riders and people using sunroofs would sustain grave injuries within a fraction of a second, resulting in profuse bleeding which may even lead to death unless he/she gets timely treatment. Nair observed that these two precautionary measures would help them keep safe from manja-related injuries during the season.
The NGO, which has been organizing awareness programmes across Hyderabad for students, said bike riders and car drivers must be careful while driving on flyovers since there were several instances of broken strings of nylon manja flying down on the flyovers.
During the last one month, at least 10 people sustained injuries across the State due to nylon manja. AWCS had rescued 1,175 birds trapped in nylon manja during 2024. However, nearly 400 of them died due to injuries they sustained which makes clear the danger that nylon manja poses.
