Proving Congress wrong, Centre says unemployment dipped during BRS regime in Telangana
Centre statistics shared in the Rajya Sabha show that Telangana’s estimated youth unemployment rate fell from 23.3 percent in 2017-18 to 16.6 percent in 2023-24. MoSPI data also shows rising labour force participation among young women during the same period.
Hyderabad: Proving wrong the allegations by Congress that the unemployment rate in Telangana had increased during the BRS regime, statistics from the Centre confirm that the estimated unemployment rate on usual status for youth aged between 15 and 29 years actually decreased from 23.3 percent in 2017-18 to 16.6 percent in 2023-24.
The statistics were shared by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in response to a question from BRS MP Ravichandra Vaddiraju in the Rajya Sabha. Ravichandra had requested Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje to share details about the high rate of youth unemployment in Telangana in the recent quarters. The Union Minister, in response to the unstarred question by the MP, said the official data on employment and unemployment was collected through the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). This survey has been conducted by MoSPI since 2017-18.
The Union Minister also shared the unemployment rate in Telangana for youth aged between 15 and 29 years in urban and rural areas. Accordingly, the unemployment rate for men in rural areas during the above period was 12 percent, while for women it was 17.2 percent. Similarly, in urban areas, the unemployment rate among men was 16.7 percent, while among women it was 30.7 percent. In rural and urban areas taken together, it was 13.9 percent for men and 22.1 percent for women.
In Telangana, the estimated Labour Force Participation Rate for young women aged between 15 and 29 years on usual status increased from 23.4 percent in 2017-18 to 32.1 percent in 2023-24, she added.
