Hyderabad: Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy here on Saturday said that Preventive Detention (PD) Act would be invoked against the persons selling spurious seeds in the State.
Interacting with Police Commissioners, range DIGs, district Superintendents of Police along with Intelligence Department officials during a meeting at the police headquarters here through video conference, he said those selling spurious seeds should be dealt with an iron hand.
The meeting was organised to discuss the strategy to be adopted to eradicate the sale of spurious seeds in the State.
Reddy said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao instructed agriculture and police departments to coordinate in completely eliminating the menace of spurious seeds. The Police Department would give suitable rewards to police officials who identify the spurious seed sellers and take necessary action against them after registering a case, he said.
The police officials should collect details of the persons, who sold spurious seeds in the last five years, to maintain continuous surveillance on them. At the same time, details of the farmers, who suffered losses because of using such seeds, must also be collected. Special teams should be constituted and an action plan must be prepared to know the modus operandi of seed manufacturers and their marketing strategy apart from their network for taking necessary action.
Officials must also conduct a meeting with manufacturers and dealers to explain the consequences if they sell spurious seeds. The police officials should be aware of the difference between the original and spurious seeds.
Reddy said as many as 104 cases were booked against spurious seed sellers in the State last year and added that most of these seeds pertained to cotton and chilli crops. Since the police were taking stern action against the errant sellers, some people were manufacturing seeds outside the State and again trying to sell in Telangana.
The police should increase vigil against these manufacturers at the inter-State borders and restrict their entry into the State, he added.
