Hyderabad: The decision by the management of Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences (CAIMS), Karimnagar, to suspend 65 junior doctors for a week following their protest for stipend hikes is threatening to snowball into a major controversy.
The junior doctors expressed strong dissatisfaction over what they described as the high-handed behavior of campus police and the hospital management’s swift action to suspend all 65 protesting medicos simultaneously.
Condemning the suspensions, the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) on Friday urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha to intervene.
“We demand immediate revocation of all student suspensions issued by the CAIMS management, and a formal public apology from the police officers involved. Disciplinary action must be taken against both police personnel and college authorities responsible for the misconduct and harassment,” TJUDA office bearers said.
Expressing solidarity, TJUDA president Dr. J. Isaac Newton said, “We stand firmly with our fellow doctors in Karimnagar and support their just and rightful fight. TJUDA remains committed to upholding the rights, dignity, and welfare of all medical students, interns, and residents in Telangana.”
TJUDA maintained that the protest on July 1, observed as Doctor’s Day, was peaceful and aimed at demanding minimum stipends. “Instead of acknowledging their concerns, the students were verbally abused, manhandled, and intimidated by police. The college administration further harassed them with degrading language and issued suspensions, causing serious emotional distress,” it alleged.
