Women in Kagaznagar mandal shut down illegal liquor belt shops in Chintaguda and Koyavagu villages, citing damage to family life due to alcohol addiction. They urged officials to act, after staging a protest at the Prohibition and Excise office in Kagaznagar.
Women voiced their grievances over the widespread presence of belt shops in and around Jogipet, blaming them for their families' financial woes. They shared that men in their households were spending their entire earnings on liquor, with some even pawning gold ornaments to fund their addiction. Divya, a housewife, highlighted the dire consequences, explaining how this behavior left them unable to pay their children's tuition fees or meet other essential needs. The women demanded immediate action to shut down the belt shops.
A delegation led by morcha president Kalyan Naik submitted a representation to the Commissioner of Excise and Prohibition, urging the government to resolve all the issues pertaining to tribals in the excise and prohibition department.
Tudumdebba State working president Godam Ganesh, in a statement, regretted that the belt shops were ruining the lives of tribal youngsters who were getting addicted to alcohol like never before in rural parts of the district.
Jainath Inspector D Sainath and Sub-Inspector Purushottam said that both Sai from Gimma and Santosh of Mediguda villages were booked for allegedly operating the shops by flouting norms.
