The Union Minister questioned why Deshmukh did not resign before and did so only after Mumbai High Court ordered a CBI inquiry.

Deshmukh resigned as Maharashtra's home minister on Monday after the HC directed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

Deshmukh submitted his resignation letter to Uddhav Thackeray, senior party minister Nawab Malik said.

It directed the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) director to complete the preliminary inquiry within 15 days and then take a decision on further course of action.

In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, a delegation led by the TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress was urging for the CBI probe for a detailed and fair investigation.

Maharashtra government had earlier informed the apex court that all guilty police officials have been punished or suspended from services.
