The 16-year-old victim, a resident of Teegalkunta under the Falaknuma police stations limits, was living with her aunt, Hoor Unnisa, after her mother died a few years ago.

The accused, Kadali Srinath, a physically challenged person, was beaten up by the villagers and family of the girl.

SP Kanpur (East), Rajkumar Agarwal said, "They spiked her drink and raped her. A case has been registered under section 328, 342, 363, 376 (d) of IPC and POCSO Act."

The police said that the accused, Krishna Gupta, 21, has been arrested.

The last rites of the girl were performed at her native village Pallegudem in Khammam (Rural) mandal in the district amid tension as activists of Left wing and women's organisations protested and tried to stop it demanding stringent punishment to the accused.

The survivor was rescued on the night of October 13 by the Commissionerate Police from Gatirout Patana area of Cuttack.

The victim was working as a maid in the house of the accused, who tried to sexually abuse the girl.
