‘Chronicle of Infinity’ is a mobile RPG for iOS and Android that has been made available for its open beta just this week. This review comes to you after I spent nearly eight hours on the game in its first three days trying to understand what the game does differently from other mobile RPG games. This is a fantastic looking game that has been developed on the CRIWARE engine, a platform generally used to make flagship games for consoles. In terms of looks Chronicle of Infinity can rival Genshin Impact and is likely to be one of the best-looking mobile experiences in 2022.
In terms of gameplay, my first impressions were overwhelming as the game has too many buttons and icons on its home screen. In the first hour it took me quite a while to understand the various modes and the incredible number of rewards the game was showering me with. The combat while good-looking was simply too easy and after a few levels I realized that I just needed to keep mashing the buttons and upgrading my gear after every level. There was simply no challenge or strategy required, and soon enough, the game suggested me to switch to auto-combat wherein I could sit back and just watch.
The whole idea of letting the game’s AI clear the levels was a little off putting because this game has three classes of characters to choose from and some wonderfully designed levels and boss-fights. To sit back and watch the action almost seems criminal considering the amount of effort the developers would have put into it. Chronicle of Infinity though, wants to be a game based on loot-gathering and grinding, it requires players to repeatedly grind, gather new gear, level it up and then let the player’s power rating decide the outcome of both campaign levels and multiplayer combat. The combat here is devoid of unpredictability and creativity.
In terms of gear, Chronicle of Infinity is the first game I have seen that offers a tier of gear that is beyond the coveted ‘legendary’ category – a ‘supreme’ category of gear that is characterised in a deep red shade. With several dimensions of upgrades and grinds, I expect the supreme gear is something that players will have to spend money for.
My early impressions have left me unimpressed and despite the really good-looking levels and characters, there’s not much here to sustain the daily grind.
Give it a try if you like to see shiny things from afar. There’s not much here to play for.
