Khammam: The city-based Annam Foundation has come to the rescue of a mentally unstable destitute woman with advanced pregnancy and took care of her at the foundation’s home.
The foundation chairman Annam Srinivasa Rao informed that the woman from Nadikudi village of Dummugudem mandal in Kothagudem district lived in a hut that lacked a door or electricity. She had no mother or siblings to look after her and lived with an aged father.
When the district welfare officer came to know about the woman’s suffering, he tried to shift her to any of the orphanages in the district following the orders of the district Collector Jitesh V Patil, but no one was ready to admit her.
On receiving the information from the welfare officer Srinivasa Rao took an ambulance to Nadikudi village. The woman, Mahalakshmi was handed over to Srinivasa Rao along with her father Balaraju in the presence of Dummagudem MRO Ashok Kumar, AIDWA leaders from Bhadrachalam and the CDPO on August 1.
Mahalakshmi, who belongs to a tribal community, was accommodated at Annam Foundation’s home and provided with nutritious food and medical care. Recently, the young woman’s Seemantham (baby shower ceremony) was performed in a traditional manner.
She was admitted to Khammam Government General Hospital after she experienced labour pains and gave birth to a male child in a normal delivery on August 30. Both the mother and the baby were safe, Srinivasa Rao said.
