Khammam: Wyra police nabbed a wanted gang of four interstate robbers and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 37 lakh from them.
Speaking to the media at Wyra police station in the district on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt informed that Wyra CI, N Sagar, SI and staff under the supervision of the ACP, MA Rahaman conducted vehicle inspections at an interstate check post at Dadapuram on Monday and caught four persons who were found moving suspiciously.
During interrogation they were found to be accused of being involved in a robbery that took place at Wyra on February 12. The accused in the pretext of conducting a survey went to a house in which an elderly woman was living alone. One of the gang members wearing a police uniform told the woman that her son was selling ganja and wanted to check the house.
Then they tied up the woman, covering her mouth with plaster and threatening to kill her if shouts. Later the gang broke open an almirah in the house and looted gold ornaments, cash besides the ornaments the woman was wearing. The worth of the stolen property was Rs 7.45 lakh, the CP said.
Following a complaint by the woman’s family member, S Yugandhar Reddy, the police booked a case and launched an investigation. Based on CCTV footage and the number plate of the car used by the gang, it was found that the two accused belonged to Guntur in AP and other two to Tamil Nadu. The gang committed several thefts and murders in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, Dutt revealed.
The prime accused in the case, Rayapati Venkaiah alias Dongala Venkanna, was involved in 30 cases, while the second accused Shaik Nagul Meera was involved in 10 cases.
After the robbery at Wyra, the gang stole gold ornaments from another house at Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka. Police recovered the property stolen at Wyra and in Karnataka from the gang, besides seizing two cars, four mobile phones and other material, the CP added.
