Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has again appealed to the State Election Commission to postpone the Municipal elections stating the elections could be super-spreaders of Coronavirus.

In a letter to the SEC C. Parthasarathi, TPCC Chairman M. Shashidhar Reddy and Convener G. Niranjan on Tuesday appealed to the Commission to postpone the ensuing elections to save the lives of the public. The SEC and State Government will be held responsible for any harm caused to the people, they said.

They pointed out that due to the alarming Covid-19 situation in the State, the government had clamped night curfew from 9 PM to 5 AM till May 1, 2021. It will be very difficult to conduct the polls without putting the lives of the public, political leaders and election personnel at risk, they said.

“The SEC and State government took a unilateral decision to conduct these elections without taking into consideration the opinion of political parties and representatives of employees and others,” they charged.

In any election, political parties should get ample opportunity to campaign in favor of their candidates but the imposition of night curfew till May 1, 2021 affects their campaign as the polling is on April 30, they pointed out.

During the election campaign, political parties and its candidates undertake door-to-door campaign to approach the voters which will ultimately put the voters and general public at risk and spread coronavirus, they informed to the SEC.
