Sangareddy: A youngster aspiring to contest for the Sarpanch post in the forthcoming gram panchayat elections found himself disappointed when the seat in Tallapally village of Sangareddy mandal was reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Belonging to a backward class community, he lost his chance but was determined not to let the opportunity slip. Since he was in a relationship with a woman from an SC community, he saw an alternative path.
Chandrashekar encouraged his partner, Ganam Sreeja, 22, to file her nomination for the Sarpanch post on Saturday, the last day for filing nominations in the first phase of elections.
By evening, after the nomination was filed, the two got married, reportedly against the wishes of her parents.
Sreeja, a B Tech final-year student at BVRIT College in Narsapur, had gone to college on Saturday morning but did not return home. On learning that her daughter had filed a nomination, her mother Shakunthala lodged a missing complaint at the Sangareddy rural police station when Sreeja did not answer her phone calls.
While Sreeja and Chandrashekar are being backed by one political party, another party is reportedly trying to pressure her to withdraw the nomination by influencing her mother and other family members. Meanwhile, the newly married couple approached the Sangareddy rural police seeking protection.
