Hyderabad: Telangana’s GenZ is increasingly getting restless at the Congress government’s failure to fulfill promises on employment, and their ire has begun to spill onto the streets in the form of protests.

From Dilsukhnagar, Chikkadpally and Ashok Nagar in the city to districts like Mahabubnagar and Warangal, the unemployed youth are hitting the streets against Congress government’s hollow promises.

On Wednesday, a large number of unemployed youth at Dilsukhnagar hit the road, staging a blockade over the long pending issue. The protest continued on Thursday, with hundreds of unemployed youth taking out a rally from Chikkadpally City Central Library to Ashok Nagar X roads. Several unemployed were taken into custody during the protests.

Also, fearing protest during Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s visit to RTC X roads for inauguration of a mall on Friday, police took several unemployed youth into custody.

During the assembly elections in 2023, the unemployed were assured of a job calendar, detailing a timeline for recruitment notifications, and recruitment to 2 lakh vacancies within one year.

In fact, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, along with now Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, held an election campaign in Ashok Nagar, and went on to post “Our job calendar is the first step in easing their pain. We will ensure two lakh govt jobs in 1 year. Revamp of TSPSC on UPSC lines and YuvaVikasam- Rs.5 lakh assistance. The future of our youth is secure in the hands of Congress Prajala Sarkar – this is my guarantee”.

As a mere eyewash, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu had on August 2,2024, released the job calendar for 2024-25 in the Legislative Assembly.

According to the calendar, 20 different recruitments, including Group – I, Group – II, vacancies in Health department, TG Transco, TGNPDCL and TGSPDCL, had been scheduled between September 24, 2024, and July 2025.

However, despite more than two years into governance, the Telangana Congress government has neither implemented the job calendar nor issued a single new recruitment notification.

Interestingly, the erstwhile BRS government had given notification for 503 Group – I and 5,089 DSC vacancies during its tenure. The Congress which came to power, only added 60 more vacancies in Group-I taking the tally to 563. Similarly 5,973 additional DSC vacancies were added to the existing 5,089 DSC vacancies.

While the Congress government claims that it filled 60,000 vacancies, all these posts were notified during the past BRS government. Adding fuel to the fire was IT Minister D Sridhar Babu’s recent statement in the Legislative Council, stating ‘employment opportunities in the government sector alone will not be possible”.

This statement triggered unrest among the unemployed who described it as betrayal of their trust and demanded the government immediately honour its election promises.

“Sridhar Babu was the one involved in drafting the Congress assembly election manifesto. Now, he is talking nonsense. As assured, the government must release the job calendar and recruitment notifications,” said Indra Nayak, an unemployed youth.
