Hyderabad: God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. The same goes for soldiers and police too, who were created because parents could not be everywhere. These were the words with which Telugu star Junior NTR got a gathering of over 1,500 people hooked onto his message at the first Cyberabad Police Annual Conference- 2021 here on Wednesday.
“I have come here not as an actor, but as a sad person who lost two family members in road crashes. I lost my father Nandamuri Harikrishna in a road accident near Nalgonda. The whole world knows how careful a driver my father was as he drove my grandfather, the late legendary actor NT Rama Rao, for about 33,000 km in his Chaitanya Ratham safely. We lost him because of somebody else’s wrong and carelessness driving,” the actor said, adding that his brother Janaki Ram too had died for no fault of his.
Stressing that responsible driving was key, the actor said everyone who sits in front of a steering wheel must bear in mind there is a family waiting back at home. “No amount of legislation or rules can ensure the change we all want to see. It has to be self-driven,” he said.
Organised by the Cyberabad Traffic Police at Gachibowli, the event earlier saw the actor launching two highway patrol vehicles that will be deployed on the Hyderabad-Bijapur highway.
Chief Guest Sandeep Shandilya, Additional DGP, Railways and Road Safety said hundreds lose their lives every year in accidents in Cyberabad alone. Thirty out of 100 accidents were fatal, and this figure was higher when compared to Tamil Nadu, he said.
“Hit and run cases have been challenging us. We put special focus on such cases and we have also been very strict on getting thousands of driving licenses cancelled, something not many States can boast of,” he added.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, citing the Malcolm Wolfe Streetwise Driving School, said this could probably be the only driving school in the country imparting driving in the correct way.
Two accident survivors also spoke about how helmets saved their lives. Drivers who drove public transport vehicles without accidents were also felicitated.
