Warangal: The Southern States Consumer Coordination Committee president Dr Pallapadu Damodar has urged the Bureau of Indian Standards Telangana head Srikanth to set up BIS Standards Clubs across the State.

He, along with the committee state president Mangodi Bheem Reddy, Consumer Council president Sambaraju Chakrapani and state secretary Ande Sridhar Reddy, called on Srikanth in Hyderabad on Wednesday and stressed the need for Standards Clubs in various schools and colleges.

The Standards Clubs would be useful in creating awareness among students about the importance of BIS product quality standards, and consumers would be protected only when they were aware of the quality of products, Dr Damodar said.

Srikanth explained that the BIS has been conducting training programmes for teachers on product quality and standards and, through them, the Standards Clubs would educate students.

Dr Damodar and others also met Telangana Real Estate Regulatory Authority Chairman N Satyanarayana and asked him to ensure that no real estate construction should be allowed without RERA permissions.

They discussed the problems of consumers who bought apartments in Hyderabad, Warangal and Nizamabad districts. Consumers were being cheated on a large scale as completed flats were not handed over to them on time.

Similarly, large-scale advances were collected on the pretext of pre-launch offers and businesses were closed midway. Large-scale constructions were being carried out without RERA permissions in many places in Warangal district.

Apartments were being built without permissions on Bhadrakali tank shikham lands and on railway zone lands adjacent to the railway line in Nizamabad district. Due to lack of information about assigned and government lands, consumers were cheated by real estate companies and hence strict measures to regulate such companies should be taken, the delegation requested the TGRERA chairman.
