Bharat Rashtra Samithi celebrated Deeksha Diwas across Telangana, marking 16 years since K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s fast-unto-death that triggered the Statehood process. Party leaders organised rallies, performed 'palabhishekam' to portraits of Telangana Thalli and paid tributes at martyrs' memorials.
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi celebrated Deeksha Diwas across the State on Saturday marking the 16th anniversary of the historic fast unto death taken up by party president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao in 2009, which forced the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre to announce the process for formation of a separate Telangana.
Across the state, pink party flags fluttered, portraits of Chandrashekhar Rao were garlanded and ‘palabhishekham’ was performed as a mark of gratitude. Party leaders and workers called it the day that brought ‘real freedom’ to the people of Telangana after decades of struggle.
At district BRS party offices, leaders and cadres performed ‘palabhishekam’ to portraits of Telangana Thalli as well. Senior leaders and hundreds of workers participated.
Dharna at Telangana varsity
At Telangana University in Nizamabad, the university administration allegedly denied permission at the last minute for a peaceful Deeksha Diwas programme. Senior BRS leader D. Rajaram Yadav sat on dharna in front of the administrative building after authorities reportedly removed the tent, mic set and tore flexies.
Rajaram Yadav accused the Congress government of pressuring the university management and reiterated that Chandrashekhar Rao’s 2009 fast from November 29, undertaken even while under police detention in Khammam jail, was the turning point that made the December 9 announcement and eventual June 2, 2014 formation of Telangana possible.
At Kamareddy, former MLAs Gampa Govardhan, Jajala Surender, Hanmanthu Shinde, district president M.K. Mujeebuddin, along with party ranks, attended the programme organised at the district headquarters.

In Jayashankar Bhupalpally, former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy and district president Gandra Jyothi led the event at the BRS district office. Former minister and Suryapet MLA G. Laxmikantha Rao and others paid floral tributes to Telangana martyrs’ memorial, Telangana Thalli statue and Kaloji statue after observing a minute’s silence.
In Nizamabad, former minister and Balkonda MLA Vemula Prashant Reddy strongly criticised the present Congress government, stating it was unfortunate that people who had nothing to do with the Telangana movement had now become the Chief Minister, TPCC president and Deputy Chief Minister.
“Where was Mahesh Kumar Goud on the day Chandrashekhar Rao undertook his fast or when students sacrificed their lives?” he asked.
At Narayanpet, BRS district president S. Rajender Reddy, former MLAs Chittem Rammohan Reddy and Patnam Narender Reddy attended the programme at the district party office.
In Kothagudem, BRS MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra paid tributes at the martyrs’ memorial and garlanded the Telangana Talli statue.
“KCR brought Telangana and without him, no one can even imagine Telangana. The next government will again be a BRS government,” Ravichandra said, predicting a BRS return to power.
