Hyderabad: Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement surgeons of Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda, on Thursday announced successful 3D printed titanium total ‘talus bone replacement’ surgery on a 38-year-old businessman from Karimnagar.
Being hailed as a surgery taken up for the first time in the two Telugu-speaking states, the team led by senior joint replacement surgeon Dr Sunil Dachepalli said the patient had sustained a right ankle injury last year with a severe ankle fracture.
Despite surgical intervention, his talus bone (also known as the ankle bone) progressively lost blood supply, became soft, and eventually collapsed. Instead of conducting conventional management by ankle joint fusion, the team opted for 3D printed Titanium talus bone, a press release said.
Using advanced imaging and 3D manufacturing technology, a new custom Talus bone of titanium, a biocompatible and durable metal, was made, and replacement surgery, performed a few weeks ago, was successful.
Dr. Pavan Gorukanti, Director, Yashoda Hospitals congratulated the team of orthopaedic surgeons for unique surgery.
