Hyderabad: For the first time in a government hospital in Telangana, paediatric surgeons at Gandhi Hospital have successfully conducted Laparoscopic Splenectomy, removal of spleen through keyhole surgery, on a 7-year-old boy Akhil, from Aknepalli, Adilabad district.
The boy, who was diagnosed with hereditary spherocytosis, a genetic blood disorder that changes the shape of red blood cells and causes damage to the spleen, was admitted to Gandhi Hospital from MGM Warangal.
Dr. K. Nagarjuna, Professor and Head, Paediatric Surgery, who led the surgery, said that the keyhole surgery was successfully performed on November 6, 2025.
“He was admitted with increased spleen size, jaundice, and severe anaemia, requiring frequent blood transfusions every 7–10 days. Laparoscopic splenectomy is a highly technical and demanding procedure, especially in haematological disorders like hereditary spherocytosis due to the increased risk of bleeding and potential need for conversion to open surgery,” he said.
Dr Nagarjuna led the surgery that included Dr. Manoj Kumar, Dr. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, Dr. Pavan Rao, Dr. Ashrith Reddy, Dr. Harsha, and Dr. Sajid with anaesthesia support from Prof. Dr. Aavula Murali and Dr. Babitha, and OT staff led by Sister Aruna.
