The State government has set a target of 15.19 million acres for Kharif crops this year, expecting a modest increase of eight per cent in the Kharif area.

Farmers are raising paddy nurseries under assured irrigation sources and sowing rainfed crops like jowar, bajra, maize, ragi, pulses, groundnut, soybean and cotton.

Reviewing the preparedness of the department for implementation of the Kharif action plan here on Thursday, he said the southwest monsoon was expected to be normal and it would be a positive aspect for agriculture sector.

"We will take steps to see that paddy from outside the State was not allowed into the market," he said, adding that the the promise of crop loan waiver up to Rs.2 lakh would be implemented on or before August 15.

Due to the delay in implementing the much-touted Rythu Bharosa, tenant farmers are now not only forced to pay the lease amount in advance, but nearly double the amount that they paid last year in some areas.

In an official release issued here he said that some 92.68 per cent of the Yasangi farmers were covered under the programme in less than three months.

The government through its agencies procures crops from farmers at the support price.

Farmers in India have sown Kharif crops across 1022.51 lakh hectares so far this year, as against 1021.48 lakh hectares in the same period of last year, according to the latest data from the Agriculture Ministry.
