Hyderabad: Works on the iconic Mir Alam Bridge over the Nizam-era Mir Alam Tank are likely to commence by November.
The Musi River Development Corporation (MRDCL) is executing the bridge works with a budget of Rs 430 crore to ease traffic congestion.
“The MRDCL has floated the tender and would be finalized by the second week of September. Works may commence from November,” K Suresh Kumar, Chief Engineer, MRDCL, told ‘Telangana Today’.
The bridge over the tank which has been a prominent landmark in the city since the Nizam’s rule, was proposed as part of the Musi Rejuvenation Project.
The key features of the bridge include a length of 2.6 km and four lanes with 45 of its pillars constructed in the waters of Mir Alam Tank. The bridge, being considered as an iconic infrastructure initiative, will connect the Bengaluru National Highway at Shastripuram to Chintalmet.
The construction will significantly improve local infrastructure and contribute to economic growth. The proposed facility aims to link the Bengaluru-Hyderabad National Highway with Chintalmet Road to ease traffic congestion and improve transportation access on the south side of Hyderabad.
Currently, commuters detour at least 3 to 4 km to here taking more than 20 minutes of travelling time. The newly constructed bridge will help reduce travelling time by up to five to 10 minutes and fuel consumption for nearly 1 lakh daily commuters on either side of the bridge, including areas such as Bahadurpura, Nehru Zoological Park, Aram Garh, Chintalmet, Shastripuram.
Regarding land acquisition, MRDCL officials are identifying the affected properties on both sides of the bridge. The exact land to be acquired will be known once the tender process is over, said a senior MRDCL official.
The blueprint of the bridge, including designs and structural drawings, will be reviewed by leading technology institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU-H) Hyderabad, the official added.
MRDCL is scheduled to complete the bridge within 24 months from the commencement of works.
