Ashoka Halwa, a famous variety of halwa from Tamil Nadu, is also referred to as Moong dal halwa, a delightful delicacy, across north India. The preparation differs from Asoka to Moong dal halwa though made with split green gram lentils, sugar and ghee. Ashoka halwa is prepared on celebratory and festive occasions especially in Thanjavur (Thiruvaiyur) and is also called as Thiruvaiyur halwa. It is served in most of the weddings across Thanjavur and Tamil Nadu. It is soft, glossy in comparison with Moong dal halwa. It is made a coarse and flaky, but is moist and delicious.
This mouth melting sweet can be an ideal after meal dessert, and completes the festive or celebratory occasion perfectly. It can be served warm with dollops of nuts over it or can be topped with a scoop of ice-cream of our choice which definitely would take us to the next level. Ideal for prasadam as it is a festive season.
