Hyderabad: Anger and resentment against the continued apathy of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board and the union government towards the plight of residents of the Cantonment spilled out on to the streets on Monday, with several residents taking out a candle light rally to protest against illegal closure of roads.
The rally, which began from near the Ramakrishnapuram Flyover, saw several residents holding placards, shouting slogans and airing their opposition to the closures of roads in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board limits by the Local Military Authority. They also demanded that the Defence Minister immediately intervene and settle the issue.
Watch:
The issue of civilians being repeatedly put to inconvenience by the LMA had echoed in the State Assembly last week with IT Minister KT Rama Rao going to the extent of saying the State would be forced to cut power and water supply to the LMA installations in the city if they continued the harassment of the civilians. The harassment, he had pointed out, was by closing roads without following procedure and by putting up obstacles in the path of development of the region.
The issue escalated again after a statement purportedly from the SCB Chief Executive Officer Ajith Reddy, saying there was lack of clarity on list of closed roads in SCB.
According to the Federation of Northeastern Colonies of Secunderabad, Reddy said in the statement that only two roads were closed in the SCB limits as per his knowledge.
“We request him to kindly review the report sent by his predecessor CVR Chandrashekar in 2018 to his higher ups, wherein he mentioned the list of road closed by LMA without following procedure prescribed under SEC 258 of the Cantt Act 2006,” the federation said, pointing out that even that list was incomplete and that there were 21 roads closed illegally.
These were apart from the illegal walls built across the roads in the Golf Course and RK Puram areas, the federation pointed out, requesting the Defence Minister and other authorities to immediately ensure that the LMA followed orders issued by the Defence Minister and also from the Army Headquarters.
