Polytechnic students in Hyderabad expressed dissatisfaction after talks with officials on the government’s move to merge polytechnics with the Young India Skills University under the Shakti department. They demanded revocation of GO MS 97, citing fears of arbitrary fee hikes and dilution of the decades‑old polytechnic system.

Telangana’s polytechnic education system is facing uncertainty following GO MS No. 97 proposing to move polytechnics from SBTET to the Young India Skills University. Students and staff have raised concerns over academics, fees, careers, cadre structure and ECET.

Left-wing student unions held a protest at Government Polytechnic College in Rudrampur, Kothagudem, demanding the revocation of GO No. 97. They opposed the proposed PPP model and called for stronger public polytechnic education, infrastructure, faculty and student support.

Despite AICTE approval for evening engineering and diploma programmes, the Telangana government has not permitted private colleges to offer them, leaving hundreds of working professionals disappointed. While Osmania University College of Engineering continues to run courses, other colleges await clearance.

The State Board of Technical Education and Training in Telangana is planning to introduce an AI-based evaluation system for diploma students in engineering and pharmacy programmes. The system, which scans answer scripts and matches them against prepared answer keys, has faced challenges in recognising handwriting, solving mathematical problems, and interpreting engineering drawings.

The revised exams date will be announced soon, the Board said in a statement.

A proposal to cease exams for the manual typewriting course has been sent by the Technical Education department to the State government. The proposal, if ratified, will effectively signal the end of the formal examinations on the typewriters.

Curriculum to undergo major changes this academic year

As per the new curriculum, the course structure will contain six theory and four laboratory courses in each semester for five semesters except for the sixth semester during which the students must undertake industry internships.

Similarly, a total of 36, 496 girls had appeared for the entrance test out of which 32, 459 i.e. 88.94 percent cleared the test, officials on Monday said.

Test will be conducted from 11 am to 1.30 pm and entry into centres commences one hour prior to commencement of exam

The entrance test to various diploma programmes will now be conducted on May 24 from 11 am to 1.30 pm, instead on May 17.
