The accident took place on Tuesday morning near Patna village, around 80 km from the Sidhi district headquarters, when the bus was on its way to Satna from Sidhi.

At least 37 people, including 16 women, died after a bus fell off a bridge into a canal near Patna village in Sidhi district on Tuesday morning, police said.

Prima facie, 44 passengers were travelling on the bus at the time of the accident, which occurred around 8:30 AM.

Umesh Joga, Inspector General (Rewa zone) said at least seven persons swam to safety after the bus landed into the canal near Patna village.

The driver, in an attempt to save a two-wheeler rider, took a sharp turn and lost control over the wheel, leading to the accident.

A total of six persons were killed and seven injured when a bus caught fire after coming in contact with a 11,000 volt high tension wire, police said on Sunday.

Police said the deceased are yet to be identified.

The accident took place at Kondaibari ghat around 3.15 am when the private bus was going from Malkapur to Surat in Gujarat.
