At least 18 people were killed and 25 injured after a truck hit a double-decker bus in Barabanki late on Tuesday night, police said.

The axle of the bus broke down and it was parked on the road when a speeding truck coming from behind hit it.

The bus was travelling from Sialkot to Rajanpur and met with an accident in Dera Ghazi Khan area of Punjab.

The deceased woman was identified as Ammulu, 30, while her injured brother was identified as Reddy Prakash.

Ganpatlal, a passenger of the ill-fated bus, claimed that nearly 100 people were travelling in the vehicle and a number of them were sitting on its roof.

Prima facie, it seems one of the tyres burst following which the vehicle overturned, the official said.

Two women, identified as Nandani Fazal Khan (20) and Rupali Asrathe (36), died in the mishap.

Mohammed Altaf Ahmed (14) and Shoaib (20), both students and residents of Old Malakpet, were returning home on their motorbike after attending a marriage-related ceremony.

The accident occurred in Teesa sub-division in the morning, Chamba Superintendent of Police S Arul Kumar told PTI.

According to the police, the two had gone for a regular checkup at a private hospital in Hyderguda and were returning home around 10 am when the mishap occurred.

Sources said the couple who were on the right side of the bus, accidentally came under the bus while negotiating a pothole ahead.
