The Director of Medical Education, Telangana, has terminated 94 government doctors for remaining unauthorisedly absent for over a year. The action impacts several key departments and medical colleges across the State.

Collector B Satya Prasad on Thursday issued orders surrendering Jagtial Government General Hospital Superintendent Dr L Ramulu to the Director of Medical Education on charges of neglecting duties.

In the past two to three years, Telangana State has seen a significant increase in government teaching hospitals. From 2022 to 2025, a total of 27 government medical colleges have been established, creating a need for faculty positions. Of the 16,024 total posts, 4,013 will be filled on a contract basis, 9,684 on an outsourcing basis, approximately 2,322 on an honorarium basis, and 5 on an MTS basis.

The decision, backed by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodara Raja Narsimha, aims to alleviate the mental stress of medical staff serving the poor.

The government also has kept Additional Director (Leprosy), Dr Ravinder Naik as in-charge to the post of Director, Public Health and Family Welfare, duly relieving Dr G Srinivasa Rao, from the post of in-charge Director of Public Health and Family Welfare.

Of these, three are Professor posts and five each posts are of Associate and Assistant Professors.

DME, Telangana, Dr K Ramesh Reddy has urged Government doctors to be more willing to work in new Government medical colleges that are coming-up in districts where specialty doctors are in short change.

The State government accorded permission to fill-up 1827 posts of staff nurse in teaching hospitals that fall under DME.

On December, 6, 2022, the State Government had notified to fill-up 1147 posts of Assistant Professors under various specialties in teaching hospitals under DME.

The DME conducted walk-in-interviews on December 9 and provisional selection of the candidates was concluded within a day.
